I have been prescribed Sildenafil to treat my Erectile Dysfunction, Now what!?

Sildenafil is the generic name, (Viagra) a medication that treats men diagnosed with erectile dysfunction (ED). It works by dilating the blood vessels in the erectile tissue to be able to obtain and maintain an erection easier. Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor or PDE-5, they cause vasodilation in the penis and lung by blocking the breakdown of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) which results in the prolongation of the action of mediators of vasodilation including nitric oxide.

  • How to take your medication?

 As needed: 20 – 100 mg by mouth one hour before sexual activity. May be taken up to 4 hours before sexual activity. 

Alternatives: Your 10Rx doctor or pharmacist may recommend or prescribe a dosage or regimen not listed above; be sure to always follow their guidance.

Follow the directions on your prescription carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take sildenafil as directed. Do not increase or decrease the dose, or take it more often than directed by your doctor.

Sildenafil comes in 20 - 25 - 50 and 100 mg manufactured tablets. Additionally, your 10Rx doctor or pharmacist may have recommended or prescribed a custom compounded strength or formulation made specifically for you.

Storage and handling:
  • Store at room temperature and in a cool, dry place. Do not leave exposed to the sun. 
  • Keep this product in its original container, tightly closed and out of reach of children.

Common Adverse Reactions:

Flushing 10 – 19 % of patients

Headache 16 – 46 % of patients

Heartburn 3 – 17 % of patients

Visual disturbance 2 – 11 % of patients

Nose Bleeds 9 – 13 % of patients" 

Contraindications:

Alpha-blockers - Taking Sildenafil with an alpha-blocker may result in your blood pressure becoming too low. If your blood pressure is too low, you may feel faint, dizzy, or lose consciousness.

Nitrates (including isosorbide mononitrate and dinitrate) - It's not safe to use erectile dysfunction medications such as Viagra (sildenafil), or Cialis (tadalafil) if you also use nitrates to treat hypertension or chest pain. Used together, these drugs could cause a severe, potentially fatal drop in your blood pressure.

Do not take more Sildenafil than is prescribed to you. Doing so can result in a dramatic and unsafe drop in blood pressure that may lead to hospitalization.

Warnings and Precautions:

Call your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any of the following:
  • Chest pain immediately after taking Sildenafil.
  • Changes in your ability to discriminate colors
  • Hearing or vision loss
  • Priapism (painful erection lasting more than 6 hours)

If you are taking sildenafil to treat erectile dysfunction, be aware that it does not cure erectile dysfunction or increase libido. Sildenafil also does not prevent pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases, such as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
